[Quickie Reviews] Online lit mags: For Every Year.
Overall hits you like: Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory where instead of chocolate and candy there are word things that humans have no way of describing yet.
Aesthetic seems: ADD but in a really good way. Lovely candid surprises and a few WTFs. I mean the only theme is that there’s a story or poem for every year (duh) since 1400 (currently it’s at 1590), but who knows WTF it will be.
Look feels: Traipsing through the candy cane forest in wintertime at dusk.
Technical specs: Things that I think people would call experimental short stories, poetry and prose poetry. Lots of new writers. Seems randomly updated? Keep up on your feed reader.
Current issue standouts: There are no issues, so here are some of my all-time favorites.
- 1550: How Nostradamus Got His Groove Back And Learned To Stop Verbally Abusing His Wife For No Good Reason by Reynard Seifert
I’m really glad I’ve just finished writing this almanac, thinks Nostradamus, stroking his beard. From the other room his wife asks, Do you want a sandwich? And he says, Shut up, woman, I’m trying to think!
- 1529: Crash Diet by Socrates Adams-Florou
An old worm, Ian, clears his throat. He starts to speak, coughing and wheezing.
- 1514: There’s something about Mary by Chris East
Get away from me get away. This is the worst day of my life. I hate these things.
- 1503: Elizabeth York, wife to Henry VII, King of England, Dies Shortly After Giving Birth to her Seventh Child by Paula Bomer
I’M SCARED. I’M SCARED OF THE PAIN. I’M SCARED THE BABY WON’T BE OK. I’M SCARED OF MEETING THIS BABY.
- 1436: Squarcialupi Codex, or Super Mario by Crispin Best
All the bricks in Super Mario’s house turn into gold coins. The coins hang in the air, turning.
