“comte de lautréamont said “poetry must be written by all.” with the social media that now exists, this situation is becoming increasingly possible. in the video i discuss why i like poetry as social interaction a lot and why i think it’s an idea that could spawn a lot of renewed interest and excitement in the artform”—Steve Roggenbuck, poetry 2.0: everybody can be poets thank god

Steve Roggenbuck is the author of i am like october when i am dead, DOWNLOAD HELVETICA FOR FREE.COM, and internet sensations such as livemylief and INTERNET POETRY. He is 23 years old and lives in Chicago.

Here’s an alternate take on the relationship between the internet and ‘art’ or ‘life’ by the British author Will Self (one of my favorite fiction writers) — http://felixsalmon.tumblr.com/post/6405050483/will-self-questions-the-rituals-of-our-digital

mmm i have to admit i feel kind of scattered and tired at the moment, but i watched the video and i dont really understand his concerns

in places that allow anonymity, people can get kind of gross and unrestrained online. but places like facebook that encourage ppl to use their real identity and kind of encourage them to present the same transparent self to their family, co-workers, and friends.. i think its great. it helps ppl maintain relationships, have fun times without needing to be together in real life, and helps culture spread in a more authentic way (when people like it and choose to share it, rather than when gatekeepers say it Should be spread). the thing he mentioned about finding “confreres” can be extremely positive too: small niches are given wings. social change movements and art movements are able to fester and grow much faster because they’re not limited to ppl in the same city

poets and other creators of culture i think have the biggest advantage even.. we can get our work to people without going through ANY major gatekeepers (if we like). all you need to spread culture on the internet is a willingness to work very hard + an ability to make really quality content.. i think thats a really great opportunity, and one that very few poets have taken advantage of so far

sorry if i’ve completely missed Self’s points haha.. i’m so into the benefits of using social media, it may be hard for me to see the downsides that come with it

and yeah tony is really great. really great teacher + seems like a great guy in general

Steve, while I agree with you about bypassing the gatekeepers, and obviously social media do offer all of those kinds of community-enhancing benefits, I think Self’s point is more structural than practical. I think he’s saying that in this incredibly elaborate system of rewards, users begin to behave compulsively and as reactionaries, and therefore tend to lose their ‘authentic’ decision-making self, and become less resistant to group think. It’s quite possible that there are benefits AND dangers inherent in social media, just as there are in every other human cultural development.

There are benefits and dangers in everything in life, not just social media. I liked what Steve had to say here in his comment above, especially about “transparent self.”

oh, and Steve, great to see you here – Derek Piotr gave me your little October book last year sometime – makes me wanna hum “It’s a small world after all”.

    my favorite parts are
‘um? babygirl? what the eff are you talking about’
‘poetry doesn’t need to be objectively better than it has been’
‘poetry already makes me more critical of my language than almost anybody else around me in the world’
    ‘i’ll tweet you effing back!’

i want ‘um? babygirl? what the eff are you talking about’ to be my tagline
