There are just a few things in life that will officially cause me to balk in their direction; as it turns out, self improvement, forward progress, and plastic surgery are not on that short list. And so we have bookshelf porn, because regular porn was not quite enough for avid viewers of porn. Defined loosely as”regular porn except with infinitely more pages and probably fewer pictures,” Bookshelf Porn was first brought into the public’s imagination by Supreme Court Justice Porter Stewart, whose concurring opinion in the landmark Jacobellis v. Ohio (1964), brought about a tidy ruling on the existence of possible obscenity as it was found by police in the top desk drawer of a rural home near Cincinnati.

In his opinion, Justice Stewart noted that “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [‘hard-core pornography’]; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it, and the [library and its books as they existed in the photographs] involved in this case [are] not that.” So were the pictures in that little family’s private picture book of… books — were they just too tame to be considered real porn?
